Article 4 of Constitution of the State of Kuwait

Kuwait is a hereditary Emirate in the descendants of the late Mubarak Al-Sabah. The Crown Prince shall be appointed within one year at most of the Emir's accession, and his appointment shall be by an Emiri Order based on the Emir's nomination and a pledge of allegiance by the National Assembly, given in a special session with the approval of a majority of the members constituting the Assembly. If the appointment is not made in the foregoing manner, the Emir shall nominate at least three of the aforementioned descendants for the succession, and the Assembly shall pledge allegiance to one of them as Crown Prince. The Crown Prince must be of full legal age, of sound mind, and a legitimate son of Muslim parents. All other provisions concerning succession to the Emirate shall be regulated by a special law issued within one year from the date this Constitution comes into force. That law shall have constitutional status and may therefore be amended only in the manner prescribed for amending the Constitution.
