Maintenance for a wife or relative under the Jaʿfari school has no exhaustive enumeration of its types. The criterion is what a person needs for subsistence from the necessities of life. Its implication: it varies in type, quantity and manner according to differences in times and places. Its consequence: the criterion for determining it is custom, taking into account the circumstances of the person obliged to provide it. Presumed knowledge thereof—ignorance of its provisions may not be pleaded as an excuse:

نفقة الزوجة أو القريب في المذهب الجعفري لا حصر لأنواعها. العبرة فيها بما يحتاجه الإنسان لمعيشته من متطلبات الحياة. مفاد ذلك: اختلافها نوعاً وكماً وكيفاً تبعاً لإختلاف الأزمنة والأمكنة. مؤدى ذلك: أن مناط تحديدها هو العرف مع مراعاة حال الملُزم بها. افتراض العلم به- امتناع الإعتذار بالجهل بأحكامه:Original Arabic judgment citations
