The original method of bringing an action. Depositing its statement with the registry. Its effect. Commencement of proceedings. The proceedings remain pending until the adversarial principle is fulfilled by valid service thereof. Failure of service. Its effect. Extinction of the proceedings. This is not altered by the defendant's or his representative's attendance at the hearing without service. The same rule applies to appeal proceedings.
