Women’s custody under Syrian law ends when the boy reaches the age of nine and the girl the age of eleven. They are then placed with their father until the age of majority or the girl’s marriage. If the natural guardian is other than - 71 - Civil Procedure the father, the judge may place them with whichever is more suitable: the mother, the guardian, or their substitutes. Articles 146, 147 of Syrian Law 59 of 1953 concerning Personal Status. - If the guardian—even if the father—is unsuitable, the minor shall be delivered to the person next in line for guardianship until the girl marries or reaches puberty, or the boy reaches the age of majority. Article 147 of the aforementioned law.
