Article 1 of Decree-Law No. 53 of 2026 Promulgating the Law Regulating Procedures for Parentage and Name Correction Actions

In applying the provisions of this Law, the following words and expressions shall have the meaning indicated opposite each: Committee: The Committee for Lineage Claims and Correction of Names provided for in Article (3) of this Law. Lineage claim: A judicial application to establish or deny direct lineage. Direct lineage: Lineage to the parents. Indirect lineage: Lineage to the paternal grandfather and his ascendants. Correction of a name: Amendment of an existing name by adding to it or deleting from it, or both. Change of a name: Replacement of an existing name with another name. Addition or deletion of a name: Insertion of a new name within the sequence of names of a person's ascendants or deletion of an existing name from it. Compound name: A name consisting of two words, either of which alone is suitable as a person's name. Personal name: The name that distinguishes a person from others, without including an ascendant's name or the surname. Ascendant's name: The name of the father and his ascendants. Surname: The family surname. Grievance Committee: The committee formed pursuant to Article (14) of this Law.
