Article 162 of Code of Criminal Procedure and Trials

English translation

If the accused denies that he is guilty, or refuses to answer, the court shall commence the investigation by hearing witnesses and experts and taking whatever measures it considers necessary to examine and discuss the evidence, in the order it considers appropriate. As far as possible, this shall proceed as follows: the prosecutor shall begin by briefly stating the evidence by which he wishes to establish the accused's guilt, followed by the civil claimant, if any; the prosecution witnesses shall then be examined. Thereafter, the accused shall briefly state the facts which he has called defence witnesses to establish, followed by the person liable for civil damages, if any; the defence witnesses shall then be examined. The court may interrogate the accused in detail after completing the hearing of witnesses, unless he requests that this be done at another time. It may at any time put to him such questions and requests for clarification as it considers necessary to enable him to explain the circumstances against him.
