Article 143 of Code of Criminal Procedure and Trials

If the court finds it necessary, owing to the absence of the accused, a party or a witness, or for any other reason, to defer consideration of the case or adjourn it to another hearing or hearings, it may so order, and shall notify the parties and witnesses present and serve notice on those absent. The court may at any time take an undertaking, with or without security, from the parties or witnesses to attend at the time it specifies. It may order the detention of the accused, the renewal of his detention or his release, in accordance with the rules stipulated in the following article.
