Article 83 of Kuwaiti Penal Code

The court may, if it considers the accused deserving of leniency in view of the circumstances in which the crime was committed, or in view of his past, character or age, substitute life imprisonment or fixed-term imprisonment of not less than ten years for the death penalty, and substitute fixed-term imprisonment of not less than seven years for life imprisonment. The penalty of fixed-term imprisonment may not be less than one-third of the maximum prescribed for the crime, all unless the law provides for another minimum.
