Article 30 of Legal Profession Law

Upon termination of the mandate, the lawyer shall return to his client, at the latter's request, the power of attorney and the original documents and papers. Nevertheless, if he has not received his fees, he may obtain, at his client's expense, copies of all instruments that may serve as evidence in claiming those fees, and retain the original documents and papers until the client pays him the expenses of obtaining the copies. The lawyer shall not be obliged to deliver to his client drafts of papers he prepared in the action, letters received from the client, or documents relating to amounts he paid on the client's behalf that have not been reimbursed. Nevertheless, the lawyer must give his client copies of these papers at the client's request and expense.
